Overview

The Town of Georgina is preparing a Parks Master Plan. It is needed to guide Council and staff on where and how capital funds should be spent to improve parks infrastructure in the municipality over the next 15+ years. The master plan will capture current and emerging trends in recreation to ensure funds are invested in facilities that will meet the current and future needs of our community.

Background

Why a parks master plan is needed

As one of the largest geographical municipalities in York Region, equitable investment in parks infrastructure throughout the municipality is key for access to recreation amenities for all communities in Georgina. Where there is a gap in recreational infrastructure offerings in a community based on population forecasts or trends, this master plan will recommend how to address the gap.

Assets included in this study: municipally owned parks, open spaces, natural areas, outdoor recreation facilities, sports fields, playgrounds, outdoor exercise equipment, park furnishings including bike repair stations, sunshades, gazebos, picnic shelters and all other Town-owned outdoor recreation infrastructure. Assets included in the Waterfront Parks Master Plan, including waterfront parks, marinas, Town-owned open-spaces, wharves and boat launches, are excluded from this analysis. The Parks Master Plan will support and complement recommendations developed through the Waterfront Parks Master Plan.

Other items that will be considered in the master plan include:

  • Where there is an overabundance of a category of in-scope asset, identify opportunities to convert the asset to better meet community needs
  • Whether users can walk to a playground or park within a certain amount of time and whether there are gaps in equipment or in-scope facility offerings in the community
  • Recommendations for parkland acquisitions for new parks to improve connectivity for the entire parks and trails system

Over the next 15+ years, gradual implementation of this plan will result in an improved and more connected parks and trails network to meet the diverse needs of the community.
