The Town of Georgina is undertaking a project to protect the shoreline along a portion of Lake Drive North, extending approximately 150 metres west of Shorecrest Road. To achieve this, the Town is installing a revetment—a structure made of natural stone and other materials—to stabilize the shoreline and prevent further erosion.

This work is essential to protect the road from long-term damage caused by erosion along Lake Simcoe's shoreline. The narrow road and minimal shoulders in this area make it particularly vulnerable, and these measures will help ensure the safety and usability of Lake Drive North for everyone.

Background information

  • This portion of Lake Drive North is narrow, has minimal shoulder widths, and has increased potential for damage to the roadway by continuing erosion along the shoreline of Lake Simcoe.
  • This project aims to protect this portion of Lake Drive North from the long-term impacts of shoreline erosion, and to enhance the safety and use of Lake Drive for all users.
  • In July 2024, Aquafor Beech Ltd. was awarded the engineering assignment for the project.
  • The main elements of the design phase of the engineering assignment include: investigations, detailed design and tendering.
  • Engineering design work is expected to be completed by Q1, 2025, followed by construction in future years.

FAQs

The design has begun and construction is currently targeted for Q2 2026, subject to the approval of the detailed design.

  • During the design phase, impacts on vehicular traffic will be minimal aside from localized lane occupancy required as part of the investigations (surveying and geotechnical investigation).
  • Notices and details surrounding traffic control will be provided prior to any construction.
  • The purpose of the revetment is to stabilize the shoreline and reduce erosion, which will ultimately benefit the surrounding area.
  • The design and construction of the new revetment are being carefully planned to minimize the impact on existing private docks. We will communicate with property owners in advance about any expected changes once detailed design is completed.
  • It is expected that private docks will need to be fully removed prior to construction. There may also be temporary restrictions on access to water due to construction activities near the shoreline.
  • Access to private docks will remain unchanged after the construction is completed.
